D20 Dungeon Generator

Roll. Discover. Explore.

A forgotten crypt. A towering library. A throne room hiding a secret.

What waits beyond the next doorway?

The D20 Dungeon Generator — Story Edition helps you create an adventure one room at a time. Roll the weathered black-and-beige die to discover a location, then read a description filled with atmosphere, an intriguing discovery, and a possible route onward.

Made for solo adventurers, Game Masters, and storytellers, this free tool gives your imagination somewhere to begin.

Every Roll Builds a Story

Each completed roll reveals:

  • A room to explore: A physical description that helps you picture the location.
  • Atmosphere: Sounds, scents, movement, or other details that bring the scene to life.
  • A discovery: Something unusual to investigate, question, or leave undisturbed.
  • Your next move: A prompt to help you decide how to proceed.
  • A way onward: A doorway, staircase, or passage leading deeper into the adventure.

Repeated room types can reveal different details. Another library might hold another mystery—and that ordinary wooden box in the treasury might deserve a closer look.

Keep an Exploration Journal

Your discoveries become a growing journal containing your latest 100 room stories. Revisit earlier rooms, follow the clues you’ve uncovered, and export your journal as a text file to keep building on later.

The web version saves history in your browser when storage is available. The Windows version keeps history during your current session—use Save journal before closing to keep your adventure.

Easy to Begin

  1. Set the scene. Enter an optional dungeon name or exploration note.
  2. Generate a room. Click the button or press Space when you’re not typing.
  3. Read and explore. Consider the discovery and decide what your character does.
  4. Continue onward. Roll again when you’re ready for another room.
  5. Save your journey. Export the journal whenever you want a lasting copy.

You decide how rooms connect, what discoveries mean, and how encounters unfold. The generator provides descriptions and prompts; you supply the map, choices, and adventure.
